The FTC just forced GM to stop secretly selling driver data
In January 2025 the FTC finalized a 20-year order against General Motors and OnStar after they collected precise geolocation and driving-behavior data and sold it to LexisNexis and Verisk, who resold it to insurers — resulting in rate hikes for drivers who never knew they’d agreed to anything. GM ended the “Smart Driver” program in April 2024 after a New York Times investigation. This isn’t a fringe concern — it’s a documented, regulator-confirmed practice across the industry.
